# Thread

Thread is the newest mesh protocol in the smart home space, designed to fix the shortcomings of Zigbee and Z-Wave. Like Zigbee, it's a low-power mesh network on the 802.15.4 radio standard. Unlike Zigbee, Thread speaks native IP — every device gets its own IP address, just like your laptop or phone.

This IP-native design is Thread's breakthrough. Zigbee and Z-Wave require a hub to translate their proprietary protocols into IP for your network. Thread devices communicate in IP from the start, eliminating the translation layer and reducing latency. A Thread Border Router (built into Apple TV 4K, HomePod Mini, and some Google/Amazon devices) simply bridges Thread traffic onto your existing IP network.

Thread is the preferred transport layer for Matter — the new universal smart home standard. When you see a device labeled "Matter over Thread," it means the device uses Thread for communication and Matter for the application layer. This combination is widely considered the future of smart home connectivity — low power, reliable mesh, no proprietary hub, cross-platform compatible.
