The average American home has 50 to 80 light sockets. Fill them with old incandescent bulbs and you're basically running a space heater in every room — about 90% of the energy goes to heat, not light. Switching to LEDs is the single easiest way to cut your electricity bill, often saving $200+ a year without changing a single habit.

But not all LEDs are equal. A cheap bargain-bin bulb might flicker on your dimmer, cast an unflattering blue tint, or die within months. The difference comes down to specs most people never check: CRI for how colors actually look, driver quality for flicker-free dimming, and color temperature for getting the mood right in each room.

I've dug into every part of LED lighting: from the physics of how they work to the practical question of "which bulb goes in my kitchen ceiling?"

## Learn About LED

- [What Is The Difference Between Bright White And Daylight? Color Picker Tool](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/bright-white-and-daylight.md) — Cloudy skies are actually cooler and bluer than direct sunlight — which makes a 6500K "Daylight Deluxe" bulb a closer match to overcast weather than to a sunny afternoon.
- [Can An Integrated LED Light Bulb Be Replaced?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/can-an-integrated-led-light-bulb-be-replaced.md) — When an integrated LED fixture dies, the LED chips are usually fine — it's the electrolytic capacitors in the driver that fail first, often years before the diodes would. That changes how you diagnose it.
- [LED Light Turns On Then Off Immediately: Troubleshooting Quiz + Fix](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/led-light-turns-on-then-off.md) — At around 150°C, an LED's thermal protection deliberately cuts the power — so a bulb that dies after a few seconds is overheating, not broken. That one distinction changes everything about where you look next.
- [Why Do LED Lights Make a Clicking Sound? Diagnostic Tool](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/led-lights-clicking.md) — That click you hear minutes after switching off the lights is a capacitor inside the LED driver slowly charging from leakage current — then discharging all at once.
- [Why Do My LED Light Bulbs Keep Burning Out? 6 Reasons + Diagnostic Quiz](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/my-led-light-bulbs-keep-burning-out.md) — Quality LED bulbs are rated for 15,000 to 25,000 hours — so one that dies inside a year isn't just bad luck, it's a symptom of something fixable.
- [What Color LED Light Is Best For Studying? Ideal Light Color Picker](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/what-color-led-light-is-best-for-studying.md) — Overcast skies run cooler than direct sunlight — and that same 6,500K logic explains why cool-white LEDs keep you sharper at your desk than any warm bulb ever could.
- [Why Are My LED Lights Not Bright? Diagnostic Quiz + Fixing Guide](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/why-are-my-led-lights-not-bright.md) — Your dimmer powers the lights at full brightness, but moving the slider changes nothing — a classic sign the switch was built for incandescents, not the small electronic load of an LED.
- [LED Light Flickering: Why do LED Lights Flicker? Diagnostic Quiz + Fix Guide](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/why-do-my-led-lights-flicker.md) — That LED flickering after you've switched it off isn't a fault in the bulb — it's leakage current quietly charging the capacitor until the LED fires, discharges, and does it all again.
- [Lighting Your Home Costs Almost Nothing Now. Unless You Live in Hawaii](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/lighting-cost-per-state.md) — I calculated what lighting a home costs in all 50 states. LED runs $9–31/year; incandescent $52–185. See your state and what you save
- [What Is The LED Light Technology?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/what-is-the-led-light-technology.md) — The LED chip itself causes only about 10% of bulb failures — driver circuitry is responsible for roughly 60%. That's why your 'dead' LED bulb often has a perfectly good diode inside.
- [Do LED Lights Interfere With WiFi And Other Appliances? WiFi Signal Tested](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/do-led-lights-interfere-with-wifi-and-other-appliances.md) — The visible light an LED emits at 400 THz can't touch your WiFi — it's the switching driver inside that radiates noise right into the same band as your 2.4 GHz network.
- [How To Make White LED Lights Look Warmer? 4 Filter Gels Tested](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/how-to-make-led-lights-look-warmer.md) — A full CTO gel on a 6000K bulb lands around 3000K–3200K — not the 2700K you'll often see quoted. Hitting true incandescent warmth usually means starting with a warmer bulb, not a stronger gel.
- [How Much Do LED Lights Save On Energy Bills? Interactive Calculator](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/how-much-does-led-lighting-save-in-energy-bills.md) — A 40-bulb home in Idaho saves around $5,600 over a single LED lifespan — and that's at one of the country's lowest electricity rates.
- [When LED Lights Were Invented? A Brief History Of LED Lighting](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/led-lights-history.md) — The science behind LED lighting dates back to 1907 — more than five decades before Nick Holonyak produced the first visible LED in 1962. That gap tells the real story.
- [How Important Is CRI In Lighting?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/how-important-is-cri-in-lighting.md) — An LED can score a 95 CRI and still render deep reds so poorly it drains warmth from skin tones — because that weakness never shows up in the headline number.
- [Do LED Lights Get Brighter The Longer They Are On?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/do-led-lights-get-brighter-the-longer-they-are-on.md) — Unlike CFLs, an LED reaches full brightness within 500 milliseconds — not because it's warming up, but because electroluminescence needs no heat at all.
- [Can LED Lights Fade Artwork?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/can-led-lights-fade-artwork.md) — Van Gogh's Sunflowers now hang under LEDs at just 50 lux — not despite LED blue light, but because of it. The museum chose LEDs precisely to limit the wavelengths driving the damage.
- [Can You Use LED Bulbs In Lava Lamps?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/can-you-use-led-bulbs-in-lava-lamps.md) — A 40W incandescent wastes 36 of those watts as heat, and in a lava lamp that waste is exactly the point. Swap in an LED and you get a glowing globe of stationary wax.
- [Are LED Lights Inductive Or Resistive Load?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/are-led-lights-inductive-or-resistive-load.md) — An incandescent bulb is a textbook resistive load — but the driver inside an LED makes things murkier, and that gap is exactly where dimmer flicker and buzzing hide.
- [Can You Put A Dimmer Switch On LED Lights? Compatibility Charts](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/can-led-lights-be-on-a-dimmer.md) — Your dimmer powers the lights at full brightness, but move the slider and nothing changes — that's the LED driver hitting its designed minimum, not a broken bulb.
- [What Determines The Brightness Of The Bulb?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/brightness-of-the-bulb.md) — A 60 W incandescent and a 9 W LED both land at around 800 lumens — which is exactly why wattage is a terrible way to shop for brightness.
- [Can You Use Indoor LED Flood Lights Outdoor?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/can-you-use-indoor-led-flood-lights-outdoor.md) — Water reaching an indoor bulb's contacts doesn't just kill the bulb — it can arc and ignite nearby material before your breaker even reacts. That's the failure chain a simple IP65 rating is designed to prevent.
- [LED Flood Light vs Regular Bulb: 6 Main Differences](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/led-floodlight-vs-regular-bulb.md) — A 4000-lumen flood on a small porch won't feel bright — it'll feel harsh. Matching a floodlight to your space is as much about scale as lumens.
- [How Many LED Lights Can I Put On One Circuit?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/led-lights-on-one-circuit.md) — A standard 15-amp circuit can safely power 144 ten-watt LED bulbs — because home wiring was sized for the power-hungry incandescents LEDs replaced, and the headroom is enormous.
- [How Long Do LED Bulbs Last? Light Bulbs Comparison](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/how-long-do-led-bulbs-last.md) — A DOE study tracking over 34 million operating hours found just 10% of LED failures come from the emitter — the other 90% is the driver circuitry giving out first.
- [Do LED Lights Attract Bugs? Science-Backed Answer](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/do-led-lights-attract-bugs.md) — The "moths confuse lights with the moon" story was overturned in 2024 — insects aren't flying toward your bulb, they're trapped orbiting it by a reflex called the dorsal light response.
- [Do Plants Like LED Lighting?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/do-plants-like-led-lighting.md) — Shopping for a grow light by lumens is like judging a speaker by how it looks — lumens measure brightness for human eyes, not plant biology. PPFD is the number that actually matters.
- [Does LED Light Kill Germs?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/does-led-lights-kill-germs.md) — UV-C has been sterilizing hospital wards since the 1930s, but the wavelength that destroys SARS-CoV-2 in seconds is the same one that burns human tissue without you feeling a thing.
- [What Is The Difference Between Lumen And Lux?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/difference-between-lumen-and-lux.md) — Double the distance from a bulb and lux doesn't halve — it drops to one quarter. That inverse square law is exactly why lumens on the box and brightness in the room rarely tell the same story.
- [Are LED Light Bulbs Vibration Resistant?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/led-light-bulbs-vibration.md) — Move an LED just five inches farther from a vibration source and the intensity drop can vanish entirely — distance matters more than how long the shaking lasts.
- [What Is A Foot Candle Measurement?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/what-is-a-foot-candle-measurement.md) — Double the distance between a bulb and a surface, and illuminance drops to one-quarter — not one-half. That gap between lumens (what the bulb produces) and foot-candles (what actually lands on your desk) is why brighter bulbs don't always fix dim rooms.
- [Do LED Bulbs Have Filaments?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/do-led-bulbs-have-filaments.md) — Those glowing "filaments" inside a retro LED bulb aren't wires at all — they're narrow tubes packed with tiny LED chips, mimicking the look without any of the heat.
- [Are LED Lights Safe For Dogs?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/are-led-lights-safe-for-dogs.md) — Dogs' flicker fusion frequency sits at 70–80 Hz, so a cheap LED driver can look perfectly steady to you while visibly strobing to your dog. That invisible stress — not the bulbs themselves — is the real thing to fix.
- [Is LED Lighting Good For Applying Makeup?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/is-led-lighting-good-for-applying-makeup.md) — Your makeup looks flawless in the bathroom mirror, then terrible in daylight — and the culprit is usually a bulb with a CRI below 90 distorting every color you applied.
- [These 12 Common Problems With LED Lighting Ruin Home Ambiance (And How to Fix Them)](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/commons-problems-with-led-lighting.md) — That 50,000-hour LED lifespan on the box is the ceiling, not the average — most residential bulbs are rated 15,000–25,000 hours. Heat and cheap driver electronics are usually what cut that short.
- [Should I Switch From CFL To LED Light?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/should-i-switch-from-cfl-to-led-light.md) — A 13W CFL and a 9W LED both replace a 60W incandescent, but that 4-watt gap saves less than $1.20 a year — which is why patience beats a wholesale swap.
- [Are LED Lights From China Safe?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/are-led-lights-from-china-safe.md) — Philips, GE, and Cree bulbs are also manufactured in China — the danger isn't the country, it's unregulated marketplaces where no safety lab has ever seen the product.
- [Are Clear Light Bulbs Brighter Than Frosted?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/clear-bulbs-vs-frosted-brightness.md) — Clear bulbs look brighter, but the frosted coating only steals 3–5% of the light — the real difference is concentration, not output. Same lumens, very different feel.
- [Can You Use LED Bulbs In Range Hoods?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/can-you-use-led-bulbs-in-range-hoods.md) — That range hood socket runs 120V just fine with a standard LED — the built-in driver handles the conversion, no external hardware needed. The real spec to check is heat tolerance, not voltage.
- [What Is The Difference Between LED And Laser Diode?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/what-is-the-difference-between-led-and-laser-diode.md) — LEDs are polychromatic — they scatter a range of wavelengths even when they look like a single color. Laser diodes emit one near-pure wavelength, and that single difference explains everything else.
- [Does LED Tube Light Require Choke?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/led-tube-light-choke.md) — LED tubes need no choke at all — the driver handles current regulation with completely different technology. Knowing which of the three retrofit types matches your fixture is what actually determines whether the swap works.
- [Choosing Between 2700K And 3000K: Which One Do I Need?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/2700k-and-3000k.md) — Sunset light sits between 2000K and 3000K — which puts a 2700K bulb closer to winding your body down for sleep than most people realize when they're just grabbing a bulb off the shelf.
- [Do Dimmer Switches Reduce Bulb’s Life?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/do-dimmer-switches-reduce-bulbs-life.md) — Dim a compatible LED and you're probably extending its life, not shortening it — junction temperature is the main driver of LED longevity, and less heat means more hours.
- [How To Dispose of LED Light Bulbs? + Recycling Points](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/how-to-dispose-of-led-light-bulbs.md) — Low-intensity red LEDs can contain up to eight times California's allowable lead levels — which makes how you handle a broken one worth knowing before it happens.
- [What Is Light Output Ratio?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/what-is-light-output-ratio.md) — A 1,500-lumen bulb sitting in a fixture with 60% LOR delivers closer to 900 lumens into the room — not a wiring fault, just light the housing never lets out.
- [Can I Take LED Lights On A Plane Carry-On?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/take-led-lights-on-a-plane.md) — Spare lithium batteries and power banks must go in carry-on — never checked bags — no matter how small they are. That rule catches even experienced travelers off guard at the security lane.
- [Do LED Lights Need A Ballast? + How To Bypass](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/do-led-bulbs-need-a-ballast.md) — Plug-and-play LED tubes aren't a universal swap — dropping a Type A onto a magnetic ballast can damage its electronics, because Type A is designed for electronic ballasts only.
- [Do LED Bulbs Have Gas In Them?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/do-led-bulbs-have-gas-in-them.md) — Unlike incandescents or CFLs, LED bulbs contain zero gas — light comes entirely from electrons crossing a semiconductor junction, a process called electroluminescence.
- [Is LED Light Monochromatic?](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/is-led-light-monochromatic.md) — That single-color LED still emits a band 20–70 nm wide — narrow enough to look pure, broad enough to fail a spectrometer test. The laser is the real monochromat.
- [What Is The Difference Between Halogen And LED Light Bulbs](https://ledlightinginfo.com/led-lighting/difference-between-halogen-and-led.md) — Since August 2023, halogen bulbs have been banned from U.S. manufacture, import, and sale — the question is no longer halogen vs. LED, but which LED and how soon.
