Projector Housing

A headlight type that uses a convex lens to focus and shape the light beam into a sharp, defined pattern. Handles LED and HID upgrades much better than reflector housings.

Projector headlights use an elliptical reflector, a cutoff shield, and a convex lens to produce a precisely shaped beam with a sharp, well-defined cutoff line. The cutoff is what makes projectors superior for LED and HID upgrades — the lens and shield control the beam regardless of the light source, so swapping in an LED bulb maintains the proper beam pattern.

The optical design works like a movie projector in reverse. The bulb sits at the focal point of the elliptical reflector, which concentrates light forward through the shield (which creates the cutoff line) and then through the convex lens (which focuses and distributes the beam). This multi-stage process produces a much more controlled, uniform beam than a reflector housing.

If you're considering an LED headlight upgrade, check whether your vehicle has projector or reflector housings. With projectors, LED bulbs generally work well — you get brighter, whiter light with the same sharp cutoff. With reflectors, LED upgrades often scatter light above the cutoff line, creating glare for oncoming drivers. This is why many LED headlight kits explicitly state "for projector housings only."

  • Reflector Housing

A headlight type that uses a chrome-coated bowl to bounce light forward. Simpler and cheaper than projectors, but LED upgrades can cause scattered light and glare issues.

  • HID Lights (Xenon)

High Intensity Discharge lights that create light by arcing electricity through xenon gas. Brighter and whiter than halogen, but being replaced by LEDs in modern vehicles.

  • H7 Bulb

A single-filament halogen headlight bulb commonly used for low beam or high beam in European vehicles. One of the most popular bulbs for LED headlight upgrades.
