Fog Lights
Low-mounted, wide-beam lights designed to illuminate the road surface in fog, rain, or snow. Positioned below headlights to avoid reflecting off water droplets back at the driver.
Fog lights sit low on the front bumper — typically 12-24 inches above the road — for a very specific optical reason. Fog, mist, and heavy rain create a wall of tiny water droplets that reflect light back at the driver. Regular headlights, mounted higher up, shine directly into this wall and create a blinding white glare. Fog lights aim below the fog layer, illuminating the road surface without lighting up the droplets at eye level.
The beam pattern of a fog light is wide and flat — a horizontal fan that covers the width of the road but doesn't project upward. This is why fog lights look different from headlights and why they're not effective as primary driving lights in clear conditions. They illuminate a wide area directly in front of the vehicle at ground level.
LED fog light upgrades are generally less problematic than headlight upgrades because fog light beam patterns are simpler and less precision-dependent. However, color temperature matters — yellow or selective yellow (3000K) fog lights are more effective in actual fog than white (6000K) because shorter (bluer) wavelengths scatter more off water droplets. Many drivers prefer the look of white LED fog lights, but yellow provides better visibility in the conditions fog lights are designed for.
